What to Eat to Stay Hydrated

We are currently in the thick of that good old summer heat and man are we sweaty! That’s why it’s more important than ever to stay hydrated. You may be getting some relief from the heat on the weekend by the beach or pool, or you find yourself spending a lot of time outside by going on hikes or walks. Either way, it’s likely we could all use some more water in our lives. For some reason, drinking water throughout the day becomes a forgotten task or seems completely undesirable (does anyone else feel that way sometimes?) If you are like me and struggle to drink water throughout the steaming hot day, I thought it would be helpful to put together a list of food that will keep you hydrated and happy!

Two of the most in season foods right now are watermelon and tomatoes. Watermelon is pretty obvious, given that the word “water” is in the name of the fruit as it consists of about 90% water. Watermelon is a true savior anytime of day in the summer. Especially if it is the weekend and you want to have a cocktail or two but are worried about not getting enough water, use them in your next cocktail, such as a Watermelon Jalapeño Margarita or a Watermelon Infused Mojito!

As for tomatoes, which are their sweetness and most delicious time of year, they consist of a whopping 95% of water! Tomatoes for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Sign me up. The same goes for celery which also clocks in at the same percentage of water, which is one of the reasons I enjoy throwing some celery into my green juices in the morning.

Next up on the docket are cucumbers, which I also put in my green juices, or I love to keep it simple by slicing them up and sprinkling some salt on them. Getting and staying hydrated is as easy as that. Plus, it’s easy to bring along with you when you head to the beach for the day.

If you follow along with me on Instagram, you’ll know that bell peppers are one of my favorite day time snacks because well, bell peppers are one of my favorite vegetables, and they have a high water content. Eat it raw with your favorite hummus or delicious dip and you are sure to be satisfied.

Maybe snacks aren’t your thing and you would rather find a way to squeeze in some hydration in your meals. Easy! Make yourself a quick salad with Bibb lettuce or romaine, both of which pack a lot of water, and pair it with radishes. With radishes carrying about 95% water, they make for a great crunchy addition to your simple salad. Throw in some celery too while you’re at it!

On the sweeter end, I recommend getting your dose of strawberries in because they contain a lot of water as well. For those of you who may have skipped water during the day, strawberries are dual action for a light dessert and your fix for water.

Notice how all of these are natural, real whole foods? What a coincidence. Now, eat away!
